Lady Virute: Laetitia (Joy)
Enduring Principle: “Being present brings joy.” — Psalm 30:5
The Limited Early Release (LER) Idaho 3 Goldback captures the virtue Laetitia, or Joy, skiing in
Idaho’s Smoky Mountains. This region is known for its pristine winter landscapes and deep
connection to outdoor recreation. The skier carves confidently down the snowy slope,
embodying the pure freedom and exhilaration of living in the moment. Her sweater is
embroidered with Idaho’s nickname, “The Gem State,” celebrating the state’s wealth of minerals
and rugged mountain terrain. In the background, a chairlift ascends the mountainside, paying
tribute to one of Idaho’s most influential innovations: the world’s first ski chairlift.
James Curran, an engineer for the Union Pacific Railroad, invented the chairlift in 1936. He was
inspired by a banana-loading system used on cargo ships. His design allowed skiers to move
uphill efficiently and comfortably, making the sport more accessible to the public. It was installed
at America’s first destination ski resort and soon became a model for ski resorts worldwide. The
chairlift shown in the artwork stands as a symbol of Idaho’s ingenuity and lasting impact on
winter recreation.
The rest of the scene is enriched with details of Idaho’s wilderness and inventive spirit. In the
foreground, a red fox moves swiftly across the snow as a symbol of adaptability and
intelligence. In the distance, a bull elk stands among the trees, mirroring Idaho’s natural
strength. A rustic cabin is tucked into the background to reflect Idaho’s long-standing winter
recreation culture. Hidden within the composition is a television etched on a sign. This Easter
egg honors Idaho native Philo T. Farnsworth, whose early vision of electronic television helped
shape the modern world.
Written across the image is the enduring principle, “Being present brings joy.”
