The refreshed Utah 50 Goldback celebrates our capstone virtue Libertas, or liberty, through the historic Golden Spike Ceremony held on May 10, 1869 at Promontory Summit. On this day, following years of diligent work by thousands of laborers, the Union Pacific and Central Pacific Railroads were finally united. This completed the nation’s first transcontinental railroad, forever transforming American transportation, communication, and commerce. It was one of the proudest and most significant moments in Utah's history.
Libertas stands at the center of the scene, driving the final blow to the legendary golden spike. Her belt is adorned with the Utah state seal, and the UV layer uncovers a band around her left arm representing the state flag. Flying above her in the same UV layer is a California gull, the state bird. Behind LIbertas, a steam locomotive chugs along the tracks, resembling the historic Jupiter train. While the real Jupitor had the number 60 on its front, a star takes its place here to emphasize the brilliance of this historic moment.
The completion of this coast-to-coast railroad symbolized healing and unity after the Civil War. It was a pivotal moment that demonstrated the very essence of liberty, opening the land, uniting people, and expanding freedom across the continent.
Written across the bottom is the enduring principle: “Proclaim liberty throughout all the land.”-Leviticus 25:10
