2026 Utah 1 Goldback Alpha – One Goldback
The 2026 Utah 1 Goldback Alpha features Prudentia (Prudence) and highlights Utah’s Indigenous heritage, iconic red rock landscape, and the wisdom required to make thoughtful decisions. This one-denomination Goldback carries the enduring principle, “Wisdom gives life to those who have it.”
Virtue: Prudentia (Prudence)
Enduring Principle: “Wisdom gives life to those who have it.”
The refreshed Utah 1 Goldback honors the virtue Prudentia, or prudence, personified as a Ute woman wearing a traditional deerskin dress. Her beadwork, jewelry, moccasins, and attire were carefully designed using historical photographs and period references to create an authentic representation of Ute craftsmanship.
The Ute people are the longest continuously living Indigenous inhabitants of present-day Utah, with a history stretching back long before European settlement. Their traditional homeland encompassed much of modern Utah as well as parts of Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming, and Arizona. The red rock landscapes surrounding present-day Arches National Park were part of their ancestral homeland, where they hunted game, gathered plants, traveled established trails, and passed down stories tied to the earth. The Utes developed a deep understanding of the land that sustained their communities.
Today, the Ute Indian Tribe of the Uintah and Ouray Reservation—along with the Southern Ute Indian Tribe and the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe—continue to preserve their heritage, honoring a living legacy that remains an important part of Utah's identity.
Prudentia sits upon Utah’s iconic red rocks beneath an open sky, positioned near Delicate Arch. This landmark has long symbolized Utah’s identity and the resilience required to thrive in the desert. She gazes serenely ahead, reflecting the judgment and foresight shown by those who navigate the land with respect and care.
Beside her rests a mountain lion, a symbol of courage, silent leadership, and instinctual power. A bristlecone pine, carried over from the original Utah 1 design, stands firm behind her. In the UV layer, a hidden wolf howls under the glow of the moon.
Together, each element reflects wisdom in decision-making, seeing clearly before acting, and choosing a steady, thoughtful path through challenging terrain. The enduring principle reads: “Wisdom gives life to those who have it.”
