The California 1 Goldback depicts the virtue Diligentia, or diligence, as a female prospector. She kneels in the waters of Sutter's Mill in Coloma, California, joyfully panning the river. In her hand, she holds a gold nugget. Under UV light, additional nuggets appear glimmering beneath the water. The scene captures the excitement of the historic 1848 discovery that ignited the California Gold Rush.

During this era, thousands of Forty-Niners arrived in California in pursuit of a better future, forever changing the American West. The Gold Rush rapidly increased the state's population, fueled economic growth, and helped pave the way for California's admission to the Union in 1850.
