The California 1 Goldback depicts the virtue Dilignetia, or diligence, as a female prospector. She kneels in the waters of Sutter’s Mill in Coloma, California, joyfully panning the river. In her hand, she holds a gold nugget, and under a UV light, more can be seen glimmering beneath the water. This scene captures the excitement of the historic 1848 discovery that ignited the California Gold Rush.

During this time, thousands of Forty-Niners arrived in California in pursuit of a better future, forever changing the fate of the American west. The Gold Rush rapidly expanded the state's population, fueled economic growth, and paved the way for California's admission to the Union in 1850.
