California Goldbacks Are Coming—and Utah Returns to Where It All Began
Two major Goldback releases are approaching in 2026: the debut of the California Goldback and a completely refreshed Utah series.
For Goldback collectors, users, and supporters of spendable gold, these launches represent both an important expansion and a return to the beginning of the Goldback story.
K2 Bullion Exchange is preparing to offer both releases through K2BX.com, with preorders currently expected to begin August 11, subject to final product availability.
California Gets Its Own Goldback
California will become the newest state to receive a Goldback series.
Goldback has announced that California will initially launch in phases, with the first phase containing a smaller selection of denominations rather than an entire series at once. This approach will allow Californians to begin collecting and using a Goldback designed specifically for their state while additional releases are developed.
The California launch will also include the new ¼ Goldback denomination. Sometimes called the “Quarterback,” the ¼ Goldback contains 1/4,000th of a troy ounce of 24-karat gold and provides an even smaller denomination for everyday purchases and making change.
The California artwork is expected to celebrate the history, culture, natural beauty, and character of the Golden State, following the tradition established by earlier state Goldback series.
Additional information about the available denominations and individual artwork will be added as the official details are released.
Utah: Where the Goldback Story Began
The refreshed Utah series carries special historical significance.
Goldback Inc. launched in 2019, and Utah was the first state to receive a Goldback series. The first Goldbacks were sold during the summer of 2019, beginning what would grow from one state series into a nationwide movement involving collectors, precious-metals buyers, merchants, and distributors.
The original Utah Goldbacks helped introduce an unusual idea: real 24-karat gold divided into small denominations that could be collected, saved, exchanged, or used for everyday purchases.
Since that original release, Goldbacks have expanded into additional states, introduced new denominations, and incorporated increasingly advanced manufacturing and security features.
Why Is the Utah Series Being Updated?
The original Utah designs have now been taken out of production and will remain available only while existing supplies last.
Goldback announced that Utah, Nevada, and New Hampshire—the first three state series—would receive major updates. The refreshed series are being designed to accommodate newer Goldback technology, updated security features, additional denominations, and enhanced artwork.
The new Utah series will therefore be more than a simple reprinting of the original notes. It will represent the next generation of the state series that started the entire Goldback movement.
Collectors may find this transition especially interesting because the original Utah designs mark the beginning of Goldback history, while the refreshed series begins a new chapter.
A First Look Through the Utah Limited Early Release
The Utah Limited Early Release 3 Goldback has already provided an early look at the direction of the refreshed artwork.
Its design represents the virtue Celeritas, meaning speed, through the image of a 1930s racecar driver crossing Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats in a classic Hudson Speedster. The scene connects the virtue of speed with one of Utah’s most recognizable landmarks and its history of land-speed record attempts.
The Limited Early Release is separate from the regular Utah series and is connected to Goldback’s merchant-development program.
Smaller Denominations and Everyday Use
Both launches arrive as Goldback places greater emphasis on smaller, more practical denominations.
Goldback recently announced that future state releases will no longer include a newly produced 100 Goldback. Existing 100 Goldbacks will remain valid within the Goldback network, but upcoming series will focus more heavily on denominations suited for ordinary transactions.
The addition of the ¼ Goldback is an important part of that change. It makes it possible to divide physical gold into an even smaller unit and may make Goldbacks more practical for lower-dollar purchases.
